 What is the difference between flush and semi-flush lighting?

Flush mount and semi – flush mount is a style of lighting with a lower profile fixture for rooms, typically used with lower ceilings. They are called flush mounts because they are mounted flush with the ceiling.

Flush mount lights are installed to the ceiling without leaving any space between the light and the ceiling. Semi – flush mount lights hang a little lower, often times with a short extension so the light mimics chandeliers or pendants, but they do not hang quite as low.

When to Use a Flush Ceiling Light vs a Semi Flush Ceiling Light

Perhaps the most important factor in deciding whether you want to have a flush mount or semi-flush mount is ceiling height.

There are times when the aesthetic you want is a streamlined one, with minimal interruptions on the ceiling. For example, in a narrow hallway with a 7 feet or 8 feet ceiling, a flush light will provide adequate illumination without being a safety concern for tall residents or guests. In spaces that may involve vertical storage (i.e. mud rooms, laundry rooms, or closets), a flush light can help you maximize storage space.

Rooms with 9-foot and 10-foot ceilings would be better served with a semi-flush style. The semi-flush will look nicer visually, plus places the light closer to the living space below. Conversely, if a semi-flush were used in a 7 feet or 8 feet ceiling, it could make the room seem smaller because the fixture extends down from the ceiling, making the ceiling appear lower than it is.
